Building the LEGO 1989 Batmobile (76139)

December 27, 2025

I remember my first introduction to Batman. It was 1990, and Tim Burton’s ‘Batman’ was just recently released to home video. This was of course back when everyone had a VCR and nobody thought twice about asking grandma to record movies off HBO. At eight years old, most of the happenings on screen went right over my head. But the car… the car stood out. Yeah, the grappling hook was cool. And the throwing bats. But nothing compared to that Batmobile.

Back in 2019, LEGO released their brick built version of this iconic car. At just over 3,300 pieces, this is truly one of the most accurately detailed sets LEGO has ever produced.

I have had the privilege of building this set three times, and now I have two more on the bench that I am build verifying.

Being my fourth and fifth time building this set, I already know what I am in for. The undercarriage of the car is pretty straight forward, which is well laid out by the end of what would be the first bag. Starting bag two however starts the real challenge – finding the black needle in the black hay stack.

Because I am a glutton for punishment, I am going full torture and building both sets at the same time, completing one bag for each set at a time. Being that these sets are preowned, I don’t have the luxury of the pieces being separated into those 25 nicely organized bags. Nope, instead I have over 6,500 pieces sitting in a large clear tote waiting to be sifted through.
